Assistive Listening Devices

Hearing aids are the most popular form of personal amplification devices, but there are also many other types of assistive listening devices (ALDs) that can be used to supplement the acoustic signal in order to provide the listener with greater listening and communication satisfaction. Even though the most advanced digital hearing aids have helped to reduce difficulties in hearing resulting from background noise and a listener's distance from the sound source, ALDs are still necessary in certain situations. AIDs improve the quality of the acoustic signal for the listener by increasing the volume of the signal directly at the sound source, whether the source is the television, telephone, lecture hall, theater or place of worship.

The most common types of ALDs include:
° FM and Infrared systems for small and large listening areas
° Infrared listening devices for the television
° Amplified handset or amplified telephone
° Pocketalker for one-on-one conversations
° Audio induction loops in theaters and places of worship
° Telephone typewriter (TTY)

With the introduction of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), many public areas are required to have ALDs available for use. It is always best to call ahead to a theater or concert hall to inquire ahout the devices that are available and to reserve a device.
